Just returned from dinner, where I had my first alpaca steak. It was delicioso... tasted more like beef but with the consistency of lamb. Afterwards we got some churros off a street vendor that were amazing. Some of the things we have purchased have been incredibly cheap; the sole is worth 1/3 a U.S. dollar. Tonight we are staying at the Hostel Koala, which has a great rooftop view of Arequipa and the volcano. 3 of us can stay in a private room for $6 ea per night, which includes private bath, WiFi (I am blogging from Evan's iPhone), and breakfast. Also, there are two adorable puppies that are probably only a couple weeks old.. very friendly.
We are now winding down before a 3:30 a.m. departure for Colpa Canyon, the second deepest canyon in the world. The deepest canyon (by 120 m) is actually not too far away, but it is not a major tourist attraction for whatever reason. Hopefully we will see some condors during our 17 km hike over two days. We will be staying at a base camp at the bottom of the canyon after 11k so the return day should be easier. On the way back they will take us to some pueblos and alpaca farms, undoubtedly to swindle us with their wares.
A shoutout to Lance Armstrong in Stage 6 tomorrow.. ready to see the big man back in the maillot jaune!!
